Procedure
After a baby tooth is lost early or extracted due to decay or injury, the dentist evaluates the need for a space maintainer. If required, an impression or digital scan of the child’s mouth is taken to custom-make the appliance. Fixed space maintainers are typically cemented to one or more adjacent teeth and remain in place until the permanent tooth starts to erupt. Removable maintainers are similar to retainers and can be taken out for cleaning but require cooperation from the child to be effective. Regular dental visits are essential to monitor progress and adjust or remove the device when appropriate.
- Dental Exam and X-rays to assess space and tooth development
- Impressions taken to custom-make the device
- Placement: Fixed maintainers are cemented on; removable ones are fitted and instructions given
- Usually quick and painless, done in one or two visits
